The 2017 South East DTC and SeNSS Conference will take place on Thursday 13 July 2017 and will be held at CASS Business School (City University of London).

This event will bring together doctoral students and academics across the range of social sciences for talks and competition. This event is primarily intended to showcase the excellence of our students (via our competitions), to hear talks on issues relevant across the disciplines and to give an opportunity for disciplinary and interdisciplinary networking.

The programme of events will include:

  • Keynote academic talks
  • Pecha Kutcha Competition (with a prize for the student with the top voted presentation)
  • Poster competition (also with a prize, for the poster voted highest by conference attendees)
  • Interdisciplinary student-led sessions
  • Drinks reception sponsored by Sage Publishing

A timetable and full details of the programme for the day will be published on this page in due course.

Conference Theme

The theme of the 2017 conference is Shifting Sands:  society and policy at a time of change.  The conference will explore how social science can explain recent political shifts and their potential impact on public policy and society at large.

The conference is open to members (students and academics) of SEDTC institutions and members of SENSS institutions.  Those attending are encouraged to register early.  This is particularly important for SeNSS researchers who may be keen to be part of one or both of the competitions.  The conference is also open to all SeNSS researchers who will start their studentships in October 2017.  The conference is free to attend.

The 2017 South East DTC Annual will take place at CASS Business School, City University of London located at:

ESRC-funded SeNSS researchers due to start in October 2017 should also contact their host institutions to enquire about assistance with travel costs.

The online registration is now open for bookings and can be accessed here.  Places are limited so early booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

Conference Competitions

We are keen to encourage as much student participation as possible and welcome applications from SeNSS researchers for the following:

Conference Call for Papers:  The call for papers is now closed.

Annual Conference Pecha Kutcha Competition:  This has been established to showcase the research being carried out by doctoral researchers within the South East Doctoral Training Centre (SEDTC) and SeNSS consortium.  Pecha Kucha is a simple presentation format where you show normally show 20 slides or images, each for only 20 second. We have adapted this format and limited the number of slides to 10.  The images or slides advance automatically to keep you on time and you can only talk about each slide or image while it's being displayed.  This competition highlights an important communication skill:  the ability to use imagery and efficient use of the spoken word to create a seamless, memorable, meaningful and concise presentation to a non-specialist audience. Participants will have 3 minutes and 20 seconds to give an engaging talk to a non-specialist academic audience on their thesis topic and its significance.  The winner will be voted for by conference delegates. The winner will receive a £50 Amazon voucher. There will be a maximum of 10 PK presentations and this will be decided on a first come, first served basis.  Early entry is advised to avoid disappointment.  The deadline is Monday 5th June, 2017.  Email any questions you may have to

Doctoral researchers are invited to submit a poster on an aspect of their doctoral research. If your poster is accepted it will be displayed at the SEDTC Research Conference on 13 July 2017.  The winning poster will be voted for by conference delegates.  The winner will receive a £50.00 Amazon voucher.  Deadline for entries is Monday 12th June 2017.  Please email any questions you may have to
